Gratitude Makes Us Better to Others and Ourselves
Children and teens will experience the giving and receiving of kindness. The degree of thought they put into being kind to others, and how well they process positive social exchanges, will significantly affect their relationships and their opportunities to develop gratitude. The strategies outlined in this chapter help parents show children how to get the most out of these interactions so they can create new relationships, strengthen old ones, develop self-control and character, and become more grateful. This takes time, effort, and proper guidance from others. But from positive moral development comes the ability to understand rules, roles, and standards that help individuals, relationships, and institutions function smoothly. Itâs in this wider context of social cooperation that gratitude becomes particularly valuable to individuals and societies alike.
Every day, children and teens are faced with situations where they must make decisions to resist impulses for a healthier, happier life. Whether thatâs eating another cookie when their parents arenât looking, cheating on an exam, or gossiping about someone because they think it will make them fit in, their will is tested constantly. With guidance and self-discipline, they can learn how to respect themselves and others by resisting such temptations. We can also give our children the resources to be unmoved by media messages that encourage selfish behaviors so that contradictory external messages have less power over them.
By stacking the deck with the strategies of this chapter, we not only help children develop character and gratitude, but we also empower them to create a better world.
